The short version

HiveCraft is built by a single beekeeper for other beekeepers. Your hive records belong to you. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't share your information with advertisers or data brokers. We collect only what is needed to make the app work and to improve it over time.

The rest of this page explains what that means in more detail.

Information we collect

We collect the following categories of information:

  • Account information. The email address and password you use to register. Passwords are stored as hashes, never in plain text.
  • Hive and beekeeping data. Everything you enter into the app, including hives, apiaries, inspections, harvests, queens, treatments, equipment, and any notes or photos you attach.
  • Approximate apiary location. If you choose to attach a location to an apiary, the coordinates are deliberately coarsened on-device before they ever leave your phone. Stored coordinates are accurate to roughly one kilometer, not a precise pin. You can also skip location entirely or enter a place name instead.
  • Voice transcripts (Pro tier only). If you use the voice inspection feature, your speech is transcribed to text on your device using the phone's built-in speech recognition. The raw audio never leaves your phone. On the Pro tier, the resulting text transcript is sent to a large language model so the app can extract structured fields and pre-fill your inspection form.
  • Subscription and billing information. If you purchase a Pro subscription, payment is handled through the app store (Google Play or Apple) and processed by RevenueCat. We receive your subscription status but do not receive or store your payment card details.
  • Basic app usage information. We may log errors and aggregate feature usage to fix bugs and improve the app. These logs do not include the contents of your hive records.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Operate the app and keep your data synchronized across your devices
  • Authenticate you and protect your account
  • Provide Pro features such as voice-to-inspection extraction
  • Respond to support requests
  • Fix bugs, investigate errors, and improve the app
  • Produce anonymized, aggregated beekeeping insights (for example, regional swarm timing or colony health trends). See the Data Retention section for details

We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell or rent your data to advertisers or data brokers. If we ever partner with apiculture researchers, universities, or agricultural agencies to share anonymized and aggregated trend data, it will only include data from users who opted in, will never include identifiers or precise location, and will never be shared with parties whose interests conflict with beekeepers' (for example, pesticide manufacturers).

Third-party services

HiveCraft relies on a small number of third-party services to function:

  • RevenueCat. Manages Pro subscriptions and validates receipts from Google Play and the App Store.
  • Language model providers. Voice inspection transcripts are sent to a language model service for extraction. We minimize what is sent and do not include account identifiers with the content. The provider may change over time; current providers are listed in the app's About screen.
  • Mapping and geocoding. If you enter a place name for an apiary, it is looked up through a geocoding service to convert it into coarsened coordinates.
  • Google Play and the App Store. Distribute the app and handle payments.

All other infrastructure (authentication, the API, the database, and photo storage) runs on servers we operate directly.

Data retention

Your personal hive records are retained for as long as your account is active. You can export or delete them at any time.

When you delete your account, all personally identifiable data (your profile, login, hive records, inspections, photos, and settings) is permanently removed within 30 days.

Anonymized aggregates are opt-in only. If (and only if) you turn on data sharing in the app's settings, we may include your hive records in aggregated and anonymized beekeeping trend data, such as inspection counts or colony strength averages grouped by region and season. All identifiers are stripped before aggregation, and the result cannot be linked back to you. Data sharing is off by default. You can turn it off at any time in the app, and turning it off stops any future inclusion.

Your rights

Regardless of where you live, you can:

  • Request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Correct information that is wrong
  • Delete your account and all personally identifiable data
  • Opt in or out of having your data included in anonymized aggregates (off by default)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR and CCPA, including the right to object to processing, the right to data portability, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights. To exercise any of these, email us at the address below.

How we protect your data

Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS) and stored on servers we control. Access is restricted and authenticated. Passwords are never stored in plain text. Photos are stored in private object storage that is not publicly listable.

No system is perfectly secure. If we ever become aware of a breach that affects your data, we will notify you by email and take steps to address it.

Children's privacy

HiveCraft is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we will remove it.

Where your data lives

Our servers are located in the United States. If you use HiveCraft from outside the United States, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States. By using the app, you consent to this transfer.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, if the changes are significant, notify active users by email or in the app.
